All day on-site Fire Truck Tours courtesy of the Toronto Fire Department will also be available for the kids. This year will feature a KIDS IDOL Competition, showcasing the talents of our children ages 4-17. An on-site Wellness Village will bring together a host of health promoters and professionals to shine light on important community health issues. A diverse group of food vendors will tempt the tastebuds with mouth-watering cuisine from around the globe. This year’s goal is to have each Turtle Walker raise $200 in pledges. The Toronto Police Service, United Achievers Club, The Carpenters Union, Dr. Montague Dentistry Clinic and The United Food and Commercial Workers Union join Camp Jumoke for this year’s event. Pledge forms can be ordered by calling the Camp Jumoke office at (416) 410-2995, or by utilizing the website, www.jumoke.org. Every dollar raised goes directly toward sending 40 children with sickle cell anemia to summer camp in 2010 and reaching the goal of $80,000.

ABOUT THE DISEASE

Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that causes the distortion, or “sickling,” of red blood cells. In Canada approximately 1 in 600 people has the disease. This disease afflicts people of African, Latin, South Asian and Mediterranean origins. As a result of the unpredictability of the disease, children are at times required to spend extended periods of time in the hospital and miss out on essential childhood activities. Camp Jumoke was established so that children with sickle cell disease could experience summer camp.

ABOUT CAMP JUMOKE

Camp Jumoke (pronounced joo-MOH-keh) is a non-profit, charitable organization that was established to meet a specific need – to enrich the lives of children living with sickle cell disease. Through numerous events planned throughout the year, children can attend camp at no cost to their family. The camp is completely dependent on donations to cover the cost of children’s participation (approx. $2000), healthcare personnel and medical supplies for the camp.black">
